DonTronics Home Page FLOATING POINT Serial Math Co-processor
FOR SMALL EMBEDDED CONTROLLERS
Bottom of Page

The "Serial-Math-Coprocessor" is a floating point math co-processor designed to be used as an accessory in embedded control applications. The product is a 28 pin narrow body IC that has been programmed as a math co-processor that communicates serially with its host. Functions included are add, sub, mpy, div, sqrt, sin, cos, tan, atan, pi, ln, log, abs, chs, sgn, int, 1/x, A>B, A>=B, A=B, A<>B, etc. Resolution is 8 significant figures, range is +-6E38 to +-2E-38, and accuracy varies according to function but is usually 6 to 7 significant figures or better. IDD is 4.5 ma typical at 5 volts when clocked at 16 Mhz.

A less expensive version (B) does not have the sin, cos, tan, atan, pi, ln, or log functions.

These parts have two ways to lower power consumption even further if used intermittently. One is a sleep command and the other is by driving the VDD line by any cmos output that will source at least 4.5 V at 5 ma. The communication interface is either SPI slave mode with SS or RS232. The SPI interface can be run at up to 1.5 Mhz and has the standard protocol SS pin.

The SPI is compatible with many micro-controllers and can be bit banged if not available in hardware in your host Microcontroller. The RS232 is 38400 or 9600 baud at 5 volt levels. This makes it compatible with the Parallax Basic Stamp II, microEngineering Labs' PicBasic and PicBasic Pro compilers, and the Micromint PicSticks. Of course the host need not be PICmicro based and any micro-controller may be used. Custom versions with different baud rates, clock frequencies, sleep times, or different operating temperature ranges are available via special order. Any clock rate deviation from ideal will subtract from the baud rate tolerances seen below. If the SMC and its host are using RS232 and share a clock and do not communicate with other devices, then clock accuracy is not a consideration. The SMC-A and SMC-B may be run at lesser clock speeds to
achieve lower running IDD. Communication rate, character pacing in and out, and execution time scale accordingly. Power on ready time and sleep time are not affected by clock rate.

The communications interface is talk and listen at <= 1.5 Mhz SPI Slave or RS232 at 38400 or 9600 baud with 5V logic levels.

This makes it compatible with the Parallax Basic Stamp II, microEngineering Labs' PicBasic and PicBasic Pro compilers, and the Micromint PicSticks. Of course the host need not be PICmicro based and any microcontroller may be used. Custom versions with different baud rates, clock frequencies, sleep times, or different operating temperature ranges are available through special order.

Clock rate must be as specified within one percent to insure baud rate accuracy. The SMC-A and SMC-B may be run at lesser clock speeds to achieve lower running IDD. Communication rate, character pacing in and out, and execution time scale accordingly. Power on ready time and sleep time are not affected by clock rate.

One of the advantages of 9600 baud RS-232 is that it allows the user to de-bug the SMC code / algorithms he intends to write for his host microcontroller from Basic or C on a PC.
