Partial schematic for possible implementation attached for your amusement. Feel free to re-distribute; comments welcome but not expected. I understand Atmel won't have 28-pin PDIP parts available until August (?);
I'm not sure when I'll pick this up again.
Possible additional circuitry:
   232 Driver
    run bus lines A1-A3 to 3-8 decoder, decoder output to slave-select
       or
    use A1-A3 with AREF,AVCC,AGND
